On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke, dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the over 60s club. She always went there on Thursday. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone.

At six o”clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? Had somebody got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked or fastened as usual. There was no sign of forced entry. Had anything been taken? She went from room to room, checking. Yes, some things were missingher small radio, spare watch, a camera. That was all, she thought; but she couldn”t be sure just yet. She was annoyed, of course, but rather glad that nothing had been thrown about.

Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door “a master key” perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday afternoon that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn”t go to the club. The wire turned and caught around the knob on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.

That evening she reported the matter to the police. What kind of car will we be driving in 2010? Rather different from the type we know today. With the next 20 years bringing greater change than the past 50. The people who will design the model of tomorrow believe that environment problems may well speed up the pace of the car”s development. Today they are students on the transport design course at London Royal College of Art.

Their vision is of a machine with three wheels instead of four, electrically powered, environmentally clean, and able to drive itself along “intelligent” roads equipped with built-in power supplies. Future cars will pick up their fuel during long journeys from a power source built into the road, or store it in a small quantities for traveling in the city.

Instead of today”s seating arrangementstwo in front, two or three behind, all facing road system with strips built into motorways to supply power to vehicles passing along them. Cars will not need drivers, because computers will provide safe driving control and route finding. All the driving will have to do is to say where to go and what the computer will do the rest. It will become impossible for cars to crash into one another. The technology already exists for the car to become a true automobile.

Playing the parental role is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Parents are always worrying about their children”s safety, physical and mental health as well as their performance at school. Some are always doubtingmaybe the school morale is unsound, the teachers are not qualified, the classmates behave badly and so on. Others can”t figure out why their children fail to become geniuses. As a result, seldom have they purred contentedly about their children”s performance and everything around them.

Now public and media are directing their attention to what we adults can do to keep our children far from violence, drugs and other evils. Actually, this is also a difficult situation that has world educators and psychologists racking their brains for a solution. So far no effective way has been found.

Why haven”t we found an effective way? To answer that question, we must get rid of a long-standing mistaken idea. That is to blame the spread of dirty things on hi-tech. A dozen years ago, many educators and parents thought that television was teaching violence and other dirty things. Now people add the Internet to that blacklist. Obviously, it is people who invent hi-tech tools. That fact implies that it is human being that should be responsible for the spread of unhealthy, undesirable material. Machines have no thought and common sense.

A teenager said, “Adults are using double standards. They are happy to watch programs with violence while they ban it for kids. It”s unfair. ” It is adults who bring those dirty things into human society. To educate the young, parents should first of all examine and educate themselves. Instead of cleaning up unhealthy TV programs at prime time, we should ban them. We should let the youngsters understand the real world that exists and develops not in accordance of human will. We have to dance with the “demon”ugliness.

Many children believe that the world they are about to face is full of peace, justice, kindness and brightness. It”s nothing wrong for parents and teachers to instill in teenagers something good. But that”s not enough. As children grow, they have the right to know about society as a whole, including stories of midnight attacks, of stealthy murder, and of pitiless enemies.

52. What should parents tell their children according to the passage?

A. All the dirty contents they will face.

B. The ways to keep far from violence.

C. To keep fit and dance with the ugliness.

D. What the real world is like.

53. The underlined words “racking their brains” in the second paragraph probably means _______.

A. using their heads

B. thinking hard for a long time

C. picking their brain

D. putting their heads together

54. Which of the following statements is true?

A. We shouldn”t have invented hi-tech tools such as television.

B. Television and the Internet should be responsible for the spread of ugly things.

C. It is adults that should be responsible for the spread of ugly things.

D. We should broadcast healthy TV programs when children are watching TV.

55. What should parents do to play the parental role well?

A. They should get rid of a mistaken idea.

B. They should listen to psychologists” advice.

C. They should study educational psychology.

D. They should be educated first.

Opinions are divided on this question. Some students may like elderly teachers” teaching because they think elderly teachers have more teaching experience and that they tend to be patient and careful with explanations. However, I prefer to be taught by young teachers. Firstly, we students have much in common with them. So they are our friends as well as our teachers. Secondly, they are more energetic and enthusiastic. Usually they can make their classes lively and interesting. Besides, they are more ready to accept or create new ideas, including teaching. Thirdly, most young teachers devote themselves to their work, making them teach creatively and effectively.

In a word, I prefer young teachers to elderly teachers.
